Fence prices are for a 6-foot fence on a flat lot and include materials, labor, posts, and concrete.

What a Fence Actually Costs in Treasure Valley

Let’s start with the numbers you came here for. These are the prices we charge at Fence Doctor, right now, on a flat lot in Eagle, Meridian, Nampa, or anywhere across the Treasure Valley. The base wood and vinyl prices below are for a 6-foot fence and include materials, labor, posts, and concrete. Removal of an existing fence, gates, upgrades, and rough digging are priced separately.

Wood Privacy Fence

Our base price runs $33.75 to $41.25 per foot. That includes metal posts and premium 3/4" cedar dogear pickets with two rails. For a 150-foot run, you’re looking at roughly $5,060 to $6,190 before any extras.

Want a third rail for extra strength? That’s $3.15 to $3.85 per foot extra. Want stain applied? That’s $6.30 to $7.70 per foot per side. We recommend staining at install, not six months later, because your sprinklers and Idaho sun will start attacking the wood the day the crew leaves.

Vinyl Privacy Fence

White vinyl privacy runs $37.80 to $46.20 per foot. Sand vinyl privacy is $39.60 to $48.40 per foot. Vinyl carries a lifetime manufacturer warranty, but I’ll be straight with you: plastics break down and become brittle in harsh climates. That doesn’t mean vinyl is a bad choice. It means you should know what you’re buying, not just what the warranty paper says.

Tear Out and Removal

If you’re replacing an existing fence, add $4.50 to $5.50 per foot to tear out and remove the old fence, with a 100-foot minimum. This is where a lot of homeowners get caught off guard. They budget for the new fence but forget that someone has to haul away the old one.

Gates

A standard walk gate runs $355 to $435 . A 10-foot double drive gate runs $895 to $1,095 . Gate operators and their installation run $3,600 to $7,700 . This range covers the operator and installation only; the gate itself is priced separately. We use steel posts with thick walls on every gate we install: 2 3/8" schedule 40 pipe for standard gates, 2 7/8" schedule 40 for double drives up to 12 feet. Premium hardware throughout. Post strength and hardware deserve particular attention because gates need to stay aligned and operate smoothly with repeated use.

Other Costs to Include in Your Budget

A complete budget should also account for site conditions and any changes to the agreed scope.

Rough Digging

If your property has roots, hard soil, caliche, or rocks (and a lot of Treasure Valley properties do), we charge $135 to $165 per hour for rough digging. This is listed in the disclaimer on every estimate we write. It’s not a surprise fee. It’s a reality of working in Idaho soil.

Change Orders

The most common budget buster is the change order. A homeowner picks materials, we quote the job, and then during the project they want different pickets, a different layout, an extra gate, or cedar wrapping on the metal posts. None of those are problems, but they do add cost. The best way to avoid change order surprises is to make every decision before the crew shows up, not after.

How to Compare Fence Quotes

When you compare estimates, look beyond the total price. These three details help you understand what each quote includes:

1. Reviews and examples of completed work. Look for customer reviews and photos of projects similar to yours. Ask about the contractor’s experience with your fence material and design.

2. Measured footage and a clear scope. Confirm the fence length, height, layout, removal work, and gates included in each estimate. Ask how any difference in installed footage would affect the total. We measure on site and provide a written quote within one business day of the visit.

3. Material specifications. Compare picket thickness, post type, rail count, and hardware. Our cedar privacy fences use premium 3/4" pickets. We do not install or warranty 5/8" pickets. Make sure the quotes you compare specify the same materials.

What I Recommend Upgrading (And Why)

If you can stretch the budget even a little, here are three upgrades worth considering:

Upgrade to three rails ($3.15 to $3.85/ft). Two rails is standard. Three rails provide additional support and can help limit movement in the pickets over time. On a 150-foot fence, that’s roughly $475 to $580 . It is a relatively modest addition to the overall project cost.

Stain at install ($6.30 to $7.70/ft per side). Don’t wait six months. Your sprinklers, the Idaho sun, and winter moisture start working on the wood immediately. Staining can help protect your cedar fence and support a longer service life when paired with ongoing maintenance.

Wrap your metal posts in cedar ($3.80 to $4.70/ft). Metal posts can provide many years of service, but some homeowners prefer the appearance of wood. Cedar wrapping boxes each post in cedar boards so it looks like a solid cedar post. You get the strength of steel and the look of wood.

What Your Timeline Actually Looks Like

Here’s the honest calendar from the day you call us to the day your fence is done:

  • Estimate visit: We come out within 1 to 2 business days of your call.
  • Written quote: Delivered within one business day after we measure and walk the property.
  • Start date: Usually 3 weeks to a month after you sign. Timing depends on our installation schedule, material availability, and completion of utility marking before digging.
  • Install time: For a typical 150 to 200 foot project, the crew finishes in about 3 days.

So from first call to finished fence, plan on roughly 4 to 5 weeks. We confirm the expected schedule for your project and communicate any changes.

Sample Project: 250 Feet of Cedar Privacy Fence

Imagine replacing 250 feet of existing fence with a new 6-foot cedar privacy fence. This sample includes metal posts, premium 3/4" cedar pickets, two rails, concrete, installation labor, and tear out and removal of the old fence.

Using $42.50 per foot as the midpoint, with a 10% range in either direction, the estimated price is $38.25 to $46.75 per foot.

For 250 feet, that works out to $9,562.50 to $11,687.50 , with a midpoint of $10,625 . Removal of the old fence is already included in this example; do not add it again.

This is an illustrative estimate, not a completed customer project or a fixed quote. Gates, staining, a third rail, cedar wrapping, and rough digging would add to the price. Your written quote will reflect the measured footage, site conditions, and options you choose.

Why Treasure Valley Pricing Looks Different

If you’re comparing our quotes to national averages, here’s why yours will look different:

  • Labor costs are slightly lower in Treasure Valley than the national average.
  • Materials are imported from the coast, so freight costs add to the price.
  • Demand is climbing fast. Our economy is growing rapidly, and that demand pressure pushes prices up.
  • Licensing is inexpensive in Idaho, which keeps the cost of doing business lower than many states.

Net effect: your fence won’t cost what a blog says it costs in Ohio. It’ll cost what it costs here, with our soil, our materials, and our market.

The Real Cost Question: What Happens in 15 Years?

Most homeowners shop for the cheapest fence today and don’t think about what happens in year five, year ten, year fifteen. That’s where the real cost lives.

  • A cedar fence with metal posts and regular staining can provide many years of service. Lifespan varies with materials, installation, moisture exposure, and maintenance. Neither wood nor metal posts have an unlimited service life.
  • Vinyl carries a lifetime manufacturer warranty, but plastics become brittle in harsh climates. Read that warranty carefully.
  • Chain link can provide many years of service, with longevity depending on its coating, site conditions, and maintenance.

Our wood fence installs carry a one-year material warranty (free replacement if materials fail within that first year) and a five-year craftsmanship warranty on all labor and installation work.

The cheapest fence is the one you install once and maintain. The most expensive fence is the one you install cheap, watch fail, and pay to replace five years later.

Ready for a Real Number?

The ranges above are a starting point; your actual price depends on footage, slope, soil, gates, and how many upgrades you want. The only way to get a real number is to put a tape measure on your fence line.
